Paul McCartney rocks Madrid on a midsummer eve
Three-hour concert brought fans from all over Spain for event to celebrate 40th birthday of EL PAÍS
After a 14-year absence, Paul McCartney was back in the Spanish capital on Thursday night, playing for almost three hours to a packed soccer stadium of more than 40,000 fans spanning three generations.
Wearing a Beatles mid-period collarless jacket, white shirt and jeans, the 74-year-old ran through standards such as A Hard Day’s Night, which he hadn’t performed in public for decades, along with Can’t Buy Me Love, as well as Wings hits such as Temporary Secretary.
McCartney also time to pay homage to former bandmates John Lennon and George Harrison
During the concert, organized as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of EL PAÍS, McCartney also took time to pay homage to former band-mates John Lennon and George Harrison, as well as to his wife Linda, who died in 1998. Nancy Shevell, whom McCartney married in 2011, was at the concert and also had a song dedicated to her: Baby I’m Amazed.
Finally, as the long summer evening turned to night, McCartney and his four-piece band brought proceedings to a close with Carry That Weight and The End.
