Leading Spanish medal hope in Sochi finishes fourth in figure skating

Medal hopes for Spanish figure skater Javier Fernández were crushed on Friday when the 22-year-old Madrid native who lives in Toronto placed fourth at the end of the free program in Sochi. After showing that he was content with his performance, Fernández looked visibly disappointed when the judges gave him 166.94 points, rounding off his total from Thursday’s short program to 253.42 points. Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan took the gold with a total of 280.09, with the silver going to Patrick Chan of Canada and bronze for Denis Ten of Kazakhstan.
